Here at St Mungo’s we believe that everyone should have the chance to explore the Christian faith and have the space to ask their questions. The Alpha Course provides this opportunity. This year we are launching Alpha with a Taster Evening on Thursday 23rdJanuary, 7:30pm in the Church Building, in Balerno.
This is a great opportunity to invite your friends to experience Alpha and explore the Christian faith. If you have just become a Christian in the last year it is also a great way to learn more. Alpha is a 10-week course. Each week there is a meal, a short film and a chance to ask your questions in a relaxed atmosphere. Here is one person’s recent experience of Alpha:
I had been along to St Mungo’s as a visitor with a friend from work and I was curious. Something had sparked inside of me, but I was a wee bit cynical as well, and I was not sure about things. I thought if I came along to Alpha it would allow me a place to explore, ask questions and learn more about faith.
The course was lovely, and it was a really nice bunch of people that I met on the course. You come along, you have dinner together and you watch a video. You then have an opportunity to discuss as a group what you thought of that, what information you got from it, and any questions you had.
It was a really safe environment to explore things. I really enjoyed the videos. I was hungry for more information and I wanted to explore just what difference faith could make in my life. I had friends who had lots of material wealth and were really unhappy, and I was curious to find purpose, and hope, and obviously Alpha explains all that and helps you develop your faith.
There were weeks I went home, and I was really confused by the material we had talked about. But I had a good supportive group I did Alpha with. I noticed over the course of the weeks, me changing as a person, and my life changing as I welcomed Jesus into my life. It has made a huge difference to me.
I would say to someone thinking of coming along to Alpha definitely do it. It does not cost you anything, there is no obligation, the food is great, and it will make a huge difference to your life.
